Is Kalshi Legal? Exchange Status and Account Eligibility

What Kalshi’s CFTC designation establishes, what it does not establish, and where to check current individual access requirements.

By Simon Stern

Kalshi appears in the CFTC’s register as a designated contract market. Whether a particular person can use a particular product requires an additional eligibility check. This page is a guide to the official sources, not a state-by-state legal opinion.

What the regulator’s record says

The CFTC record identifies Kalshi’s designation dated November 3, 2020 and notes a January 2025 modification permitting intermediated futures trading. Use the live record and linked orders for the operator’s current status.

A designation concerns the exchange and its regulatory obligations. It does not eliminate market risk or establish that every possible contract is available to every account.

Individual access has its own requirements

Kalshi’s signup guidance requires an eligible adult account holder and identity verification when requested. Its member agreement defines restricted jurisdictions. Do not infer eligibility solely from nationality, a US bank account or a working website.

International access is available from many countries, subject to the agreement. Funding methods can differ by region. Check the current rules if you move or travel.

Check the product and contract

Distinguish event contracts from other financial products offered under the brand. Check the official rules, location restrictions and available contract before depositing or trading. This page does not claim that all products are permitted in all states.

For the operational mechanics and fee examples, see the Kalshi guide. For other US prediction-market products, see the US venue and eligibility guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CFTC designation mean I personally can trade?

Not by itself. Check the venue’s current member agreement, account requirements, your location and the specific product. The directory cannot establish individual legal eligibility.
